Term 4, 2010
The theme of our fourth unit for the year is Me, Beyond My Digital World and so I planned that students will use a number of thinking tools and strategies and a comprehensive range of web2 tools to visually express and share their thinking and learning journeys. The document (below) outlines the four key concepts of our teacher-directed integrated inquiry unit. I have also set up a blog page just for this Term: http://onedayonearthprojects.weebly.com/

What We e-Learners Think, Say and Do, Really Does Make a Difference!
Focus of Workshop:
This workshop focussed on ‘student voice’ and e-learners in a digital thinking and learning environment. Alongside teacher-facilitator Whaea Jeanette, 4 e-Learners discussed what a 2 day digital classroom looks like, feels like and sounds like for them. They have reported on improving student outcomes from an e-Learners perspective and how easy it is to incorporate just a few simple, yet practical thinking tools and strategies into the classroom programme.
Outcome for those attending:
Teachers attending have come away knowing what is necessary when thinking about setting up an e-Learners environment and how important it is to include students and ‘choice’ in the classroom planning and decision-making process.
Paving the way for our 21st (and 22nd) Century thinkers and learners - Whaea Jeanette

Rotation and Tessellation using Web 2 logos
e-Learners have covered Statistics in the Media and worked yesterday with gathering data about advertising and what people associate colours with. Still on the topic of advertising they will today look at web2 logos, rotation and tessellation. The following ppt was created using slideshare and details web2 logo examples.

Online Mindmapping Tools
I've been surfing for an online mindmapping tool. Bubbl.us is great for brainstorming rather than mindmapping. Mapul.com is free but the user can only save 2 mindmaps. Upgrading will cost although the user gets unlimited use. Here are two tiny url links re: the features of a mindmap. It also demonstrates what mapul offers: http://tiny.cc/28q7s and http://tiny.cc/mvga0

5 W's and an H Graphic Organiser
e-Learners have questions about the brain that they would like answered....so today they've used the 5 5Ws and an H to record information. I've included an e-Learners copy for viewing:)
|
Pro Proof: Make On-line Activities and Puzzles
I've 'stumble-surfed on this web2 tool that can be used to create online acitvities and puzzles. Pro Proof is fast and easy...with an embed code too:) e-Learners will create and share a wordsearch about the human brain.
Creating with ToonDoo
A couple of weeks ago at the RELLCO/BEST Conference I recall Tony Ryan mentioning the notion of colour coding thinking. I have used ToonDoo to illustrate the colours I plan to use alongside the modes of thinking ie: creative - green, critical - blue and metacognitive - red:)
e-Learners will use ToonDoo this week to create a cartoon about their great thinker.

MPod Thinking
Mike Fleetham from the UK (Thinking Classrooms) has come up with a brilliant, yet simple way of recalling facts and focusing thoughts and ideas. It's called MPod (Memory Pod) thinking. I have included my example. Tomorrow e-Learners will get the opportunity to create their own based on task/activities from Terms 1-2, 2010.

Online Bio-Cubes
Yes. I am 'back in the house'....so e-Learners are today learning to skim-read and research information about a self-chosen great thinker. A planning template has been used to help focus and refine what they intend placing on their bio-cubes.
I have attached a copy of the planning template. e-Learners used the online bio-creator from readwritethink to create their cubes that have since been printed onto coloured card for display. NB: No embed code or link available as bio-cubes can only be printed.

Webspiration for I-ffirmations
I have found an online collaborative mapping programme similar to Inspiration e-Learners can use to document their I-ffirmations that does not require downloading. All files are saved automatically, with a URL given for online viewing of completed files. Here's my first attempt: http://mywebspiration.com/view/416328a18bb9 and an embed version below..
Sending goals for T2 as an online puzzle postcard
e-Learners will set 3 SMART goals and send this information to themselves as an online puzzle postcard. We're fosuing this Term on the brain and so I've found a web2 tool that fits this bill and links to the Jigzone
It appears that the programme may only be valid for 60 days. Here's a link to my online puzzle postcard - http://www.jigzone.com/mpc/view.php?8C3OU5J.0F0

Learning about the Human Brain
It's always fascinating to watch students enjoying 'hands on learning' and so reinforcing the parts and functions of the human brain by making and creating models using playdough went down a treat being the first day of Term 2. Images of these models have since been uploaded into simple ppt (powerpoints) and converted to pdf files or embedded into student's weebly sites.
Other class activities completed this week re: learning about the brain include 4 lobes with actions and chunking. I've included a file below that supports chunking or pegging otherwise known as memory association:

Statistics in the Media
e-Learners enjoy Maths using IT and are learning to work this week with 'Dinner TV ADs' and messy real-life data. Tally charts are being compiled and Excel is a fantastic easy-peasy tool for creating those simple every-day graphs.
While-Learners used a Word doc to set up work, the graphs are not showing that well:) I'm still trialling Google docs and experiencing a few glitches but - all good!
I have since stumbled across a grid paper Word doc, used a text box to insert the data, put the text box behind and also removed the text box line. This gives the professional Maths look to completed work.

Playcrafter - A Game of Happiness:)
28/03 - This week e-Learners will take a bit of 'fun-time out' and use PlayCrafter to create their very own flash games. Once games are created the links can then be sent to friends.
As a very dear soul-friend of mine (who loved to play Crash Bandicoot on PS2) got married in the weekend, I have been inspred to use 'happiness' as the theme for my game. This is one of many snapshots that I've bordered using BigHugeLabs.
For my game, I'd like it that collecting little smiley faces be the objective and that players are able to accumulate life points and recieve awards. Well that's the plan:)
A great way to end our week. See you back in Term 2, 2010:)

Big Huge Labs - Fun with Images
21/03 - My husband and I have just spent the weekend with a group of fisher-persons at Otamarakau. This snapshot is an 'early morning view'. The place is serene, quite remote and our overnight stay at the marae was just fabulous!
e-Learners will use Big Huge Labs to 'do cool things' this week with their stored images. I've modified this scenery image to become a postage stamp. The date can be changed but that is about it. The image can then be downloaded and stored.
The two snapshots that follow have been modified using Jigsaw: Vanuatu - holiday trip, 2009 and Motivational Poster: Sam our family cat.

Capturing Evidential Thinking and Learning Data
15/03 - One fun-tastic thing about ICT is the 'quick and stick' ability to retrieve, capture and present evidential data. With only two weeks left in the Term e-Learners have collected alot of information that's been posted on their weebly sites and in the form of thinker's tools and strategies (along with photos that are stored in the school network still). Here's a few snapshots of the e-Learners thinking and learning environment. The Web2 tool Picturetrail has been used to present this information:
T1, Week 6: 24-25 May 2010
Term 1, Week 7: 15-16 March 2010
Voicethread - Share images, docs and videos
This week e-Learners are divided into two groups. Group A will look at voicethread, use their storyboards and create a presentation re: What life is really like at Putauaki Primary? Here is my example of voicethread titled, "What life is really like...at my house".
Podcasting - Adding audio files to still images
Group B will look at podcasting and examples completed by Allanah K and her class. Like goup one they will use their storyboards to create a podcast. Later ALL students will have the opportunity to use this information and create a 5 minute video for the global Life Round Here Project.
Post-lunch reflection- Students are finding it difficult to create podcasts and the group B consensus is that they would prefer to use voicethread. So we will all try podcasting later this Term.

My TEN Switch On's in WordleNow that e-Learners understand what their THREE preferred SMARTS are and how they learn best, each student has made up a list of the TEN things as Switch On's that they can do if ever they switch off from thinking and learning. My 10 switch on's follow in a wordle thumbnail.

Voki - Speaking CaricatureThis awesome Web2 Tools is great for creating a personalised speaking avatar.
The avatar can be sent to an e-mail account or embedded into blogs. Students enjoy Voki and the ability to personalise a character as themselves. What a great alternative to uploading one's photo publicly. |
e-Learners Checklist for Term 1, Weeks 2-5
As students have worked on quite a number of tasks and some are not quite sure what they need to finish a checklist handy has been created. The checklist also allows them to rate their work. It also gives me a snapshot of where each e-Learner is at and provides opportunity for 1:1 conferencing. The checklist follows:

How SMART are You? ...and I Learn Best...
Students enjoy knowing more about themselves and so identifying their SMARTs as strengths and how they learn best were interesting and very worthwhile exercises. After some discussion e-learners realised that what they considered their THREE preferred SMARTS to be and how they learn best were not always seen in the 'same light' as others. They also came to understand that their SMARTS could be expanded and/or change over time.
Word documents were created for e-learners where they could identify, colour and/or highlight their SMARTS and how they learn best. These documents follow:

Mid-Term e-Portfolio Assessment
Its' about that time when e-Learners critique work and the use of a chosen Web 2 Tool.
For this exercise they expand on their ideas and learning about a web 2 Tool and task using one of the following thinking strategies: Bubblemap, PMI, 2 of Tony Ryan's Thinker's Keys or 3 of De Bono's Thinking Hats. Templates for each of the self-assessment sheets follow:

Rules (as Expectations) and Responsibilities
A week ago e-learners formed groups and began completing T-charts based on rules as expectations and responsibilities. Today we worked on the task together first tackling rules and then working on responsibilities.
Students challenged ideas about what they believed was a rule - which was usually driven by someone or a group compared with a responsibility where 'oneself' was at the fore or had control of the situation.
The following Word documents detail e-learners understandings:

Term 1, Week 5: 01-02 March 2010
Finding a different Web2 Tool each week to upload our timetable has proved time-consuming and so I have resorted to using Powerpoint and Slideshare. The tool is simple and effectlive to use, although I am yet to embed MP3 files or You Tube clips into presentations.

A simple ONE question poll creator that requires registration. MyPollCreator is not password protected so anyone can respond to the question. Great for obtaining a quick answer and instant results. Try mypollcreator example below:
Bubbl.us - Online Mindmap/Brainstorm Tool
e-Learners are learning to classify lunchbox items as brainfoods and Bubbl.us is a quick and simple mindmpa/brainstorm Web2 tool for this purpose. Although this web2 tool product does not have upload image/clipart capability, it can be saved as an image. My thumbnail example is not very friendly on the eyes and so I have also include a direct link to my example:

Left and Right Hemispheres
Students as e-Learners are learning to use Tony Ryan's Different Uses Key to write and describe what they know about the brain left and right hemispheres.
This sub-topic was introduced as a whole class using a series of semantic memory (recall, facts and figures), episodic memory (change of location) motor memory (movement) and reflexive memory (quick reaction) strategies.
A Word document was again created for this purpose and students were able to add images, text and clipart then upload this file to their websites as a pdf. A copy of the template follows...

KWL Chart - Me and My Environment
Yes - We are still waiting patiently for our IWB (Interactive Whiteboard) programme update to be installed so the interactive graphic organisers can be used.
As e-Learners really need to finish their KWL charts (What they KNOW, WANT to know and have LEARNT about our integrated guided inquiry topic) I've created a simple Word doc in the interim. Each student will enter his/her information and then upload the file as a pdf to their weebly websites. A copy of this template follows:

Wix - Free online website
The e-Learners timetable for this week has been created using wix. It's a free website where you can customise Flash templates (that come with awesome animated images) or create a web design from scratch. Ability to embed, send in an e-mail or follow a URL. NB: Links created will NOT work so include the full URL. NB: I tried to edit this work one day later and lost Monday's work:( Not happy...

Sketchfu - Freehand Drawing Tool
Fab Web2 tool that requires registration. Use sketchfu to create a drawing, save and play back as a movie of the drawing being created. Can be embedded into any webpage although it does not seem to work here in weebly - possibly requires shockwave:)
E-learners are using the invention key and sketchfu to design what they believe will be the next generation I-pod. Check out my example for this task by clicking on the following link: http://sketchfu.com/drawing/704168-i-pod-invention

Creately - Online Diagram Creator
Creately is an online tool that makes it easy to create, share, and collaborate with data-rich diagrams. It looks and feels like a desktop application, but it works through the web browser, so there is nothing to install or maintain. Takes a little time to download.
Has the ability to embed but not here in Weebly. I've used Creately to make a KWL Chart for e-Learners to use and share about our topic Me and My Environment. Click here for the link.

08/02- Daily Reflection
E-learners will reflect at the end of each day by writing a reflective post in their blog page. At times I may ask for them to use a graphic organiser like a PMI to help scaffold thinking. Once they know how to use a range of GO's, e-learners will be able to choose their own. Well, that's the plan.
